Potatoes Poor

Potatoes shipped from the South Island for sale at the Wellington produce market are responsible for recent complaints about quality. Representatives of North Canterbury Federated Farmers who recently visited the capital, confirmed that potatoes from Canterbury were very much below accepted standards.

Asked to comment on the situation, a Christchurch merchant said this week that these potatoes were probably shipped on consignment This meant that they had been shipped north to be sold on the auction floor in Wellington.

These potatoes were often of a standard which did not measure up to those sold on the normal merchant-to-me rchant basis. The vendors took what they could get, and sometimes faced a financial risk. There had been isolated instances of vendors having to forward a cheque to cover expenses. Because Wellington was the nearest North Island port from the South Island, it was the main centre for poor quality potatoes sent on consignment.
