Flag Staying Down

(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Sept 16.

The Russell Town Council has taken no action on a request from a Northland travel promoter that the New Zealand flag be flown each day from Flagstaff Hill, of Hone Heke fame.

Mr A. J. Voss, of the Northland Travel Promotion Organisation, asked the council by letter this week to consider putting out the flag. He said visitors expected to see the flag flying from the historic hill, where Hone Heke

chopped down the flagstaff in the 1840 s. The chairman of the council, Mr R. H. Burnes, said he last saw the flag flying on the hill when Queen Elizabeth visited New Zealand several years ago.

The flag had been flown only on special occasions, never dally. Mr Burnes said it would be a “terrific” task to run the flag up and down the pole each day. He suggested that the Navy be asked to perform the function when the flag was flown.
