September 18 CONTINENTAL EPITOME. The European war is thought to be ended. After a series of sanguinary engagements upon entering Bohemia, the Prussians, commanded by the King in person, encountered the main body of the Austrians under Field Marshal Benedek, at Koenigsgratz. The battle lasted the whole day, and it was estimated that nearly half a million were engaged. The battle terminated in the complete defeat of the Austrians: and in their retreat across the Elbe the slaughter was dreadful. The Austrians lost 180 guns and over 20,000 prisoners, and their losses in killed and wounded A
is computed at from 20,000 to 25,000 more. After this defeat the Austrians fell back upon Vienna, the Prussians following. Austria is now massed in and around Vienna. The Prussians above and below the city were preparing to cross the Danube if the war continued after the battle of Koenigsgratz. The Austrians applied to Napoleon for his mediation, unconditionally ceding Venetia to the French. The efforts of Napoleon succeeded in obtaining five days armistice, during which it is hoped that the basis of peace may be arranged. The armistice expires tomorrow. London, July 26.
