CHECKING SEWERS
Smoke Used In Lower Hutt f.V.Z. Pre** Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 15. The Lower Hutt City Council is experimenting with smoke testing of sewers for finding stormwater infiltration and defects in the system. Thick, non-toxic smoke pumped through the system shows leaks and breaks in the pipes. The system, although used overseas, is new’ to New Zealand.
The council made experiments this week and was pleased with the results. The council will soon launch a scheme to test the city's sewer system. Householders will be told not to be alarmed when smoke begins to pour from house terminal vents or other connexions.
