GODFREY LEADS
67 In Golf Open (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) HOBART. The New Zealand professional golfer, W. J. Godfrey, was the first round leader in the Tasmanian open championship ait Hobart yesterday. Godfrey set a blistering pace for the field with a fourunder 67, only one stroke off the course record. Godfrey had a two-stroke lead over his nearest challenger, the Tasmanian amateur. E. Booth. New Zealand’s other entrant, B. T. Boys, was well down the list with a 76.
The Claremont course played tight and long after heavy recent rain, but Godfrey mastered it with superb golf. He began with a birdie at the first hole and had birdies at the sixth, seventh and eighth and was three under at the turn. - He birdied the twelfth with a three to go four under, and dropped his only shot at the thirteenth.
Godfrey played with great consistency, hit his drives and irons accurately and putted well.
