Talks On Dispute At Mt Maunganui
(New Zealand Press Association) TAURANGA, September 15. Representatives of the Port Employers Association and the Northern Federation of Waterfront Workers’ arrived at Mount Maunganui from Wellington today for talks with the Tauranga branch of the association and the Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Waterfront Workers’ Union on the watersiders’ stoppage, now in its fourth day.
The association is represented by Mr V. P. Blakeley, the secretary, Mr R. T. Goddard, a member of the executive, Mr J. E. Napier, the secretary, and Mr E. G. Thompson, one of the executive, are representing the upion.
All 400 members of the union were placed on penalty yesterday for refusing to return to work.
The penalty expired at 6 pun. today and the union has been required to order its members to report for duty at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
The Union Steam Ship Company diverted the Karetu to Auckland today. The ship was to have loaded at Mount Maunganui but will probably be held in Auckland by the company. The freighter Waiana is also being held in Auckland awaiting the outcome of the negotiations.
The British Phosphate Commission may send the bulk carrier Nidar, due tomorrow, to Napier.
