Prime Ministers’ Conference
Sir, —“E.R.” appears to be quite upset by the fact that Mr Kirk has daringly exposed Mr Holyoake’s secret formula as just another bit of National Party propaganda (though secretly, of course). If your correspondent would read another poet, Robbie Burns, and see himself a little clearer, he might lose his own narrow vision, and not join the Nationalist cries of personal abuse every time his party is frankly and jocularly criticised. The National Party has shown that its profession of belief in freedom is just so much hocus-pocus, by its attitude of “neither for nor against” the use of force. No doubt, of course, Mr Holyoake, as a party politician, seeking personal popularity,
has endeavoured to make a last impression on the public, but knows that Mr Kirk will be the New Zealand representative at the next Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ conference.—Yours, etc., POLITICAL FREEDOM. September 15, 1966.
