Shots Fired At Farmer

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 11. The police have failed to find the gunman who shot at a Wairarapa farmer on Friday night, and shot and killed 12 of his sheep.

The farmer, Mr John Holmes, of Palliser Bay, threw himself to the ground as rifle shots crashed around him. H«> was making routine rounds of his 3000-head sheep station when he was fired at. It took him 45 minutes to crawl 300 yards to a nearby farmhouse for shelter. Twenty armed policemen scoured the rugged and lonely area, 50 miles from Masterton, from dawn to dusk on Saturday, but the gunman could not be found. Ten men from the Wellington armed offenders squad assisted in the search. Two dogs were used. Inspector B. R. Davies, head of the squad, said he believed a .303 rifle was used. Spent cartridges were found near the sheep carcases.

Heavy rain and hail most of the day hampered the police search. The terrain was a good place for a man trying to avoid his searchers, said Inspector Davies.
