Stablemates Picked For Today’s Double

The combined efforts of Hushaway, Pharasal, and Time and Tide could make the Ashburton T.A.B. double today a double for J. C. Tomkinson’s Riccarton stable.

Hushaway is in the first leg, the mile Tinwald Handicap, and Time and Tide and Pharasal are rival candidates for the second leg, the Spring Handicap, six furlongs.

Hushaway and Time and Tide ran in the Flying Handicap on Saturday. Hushaway was runner-up to Glamis Lad. Time and Tide struck trouble early and failed to clear the jniddle of a bigger and stronger field than the one he will meet today. Pharasal, winner of sixraces from the Tomkinson stable last season, is making a fresh start for the season today, and a successful four-year-old debut might not be beyond him. It is a field with a wideopen look about it in the absence of Glamis Lad, Hushaway, and Quick Flight, the first three in the corresponding race on Saturday. Tumble, fourth on Saturday, is a place prospect at least. Mile Test

The Tinwald Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double today, is run at a mile. Hushaway and Combination are good at that distance, and Fairlane should also show to better advantage as a miler than at six furlongs. Natter has a mile win at Washdyke close up on her record, and the prospect of good footing today places another victory within reach of last season’s New Zealand Oaks winner.

Quick Flight has form to assure him of solid backing, at least for a place. The John Grigg Stakes, for 3 year olds will be another attraction on today's card.

Gay Doctor, winner of the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton last month, could be the favourite, but he might not find it easy to justify that ranking if Beau Supreme, Her Pal and others run up to form or potential. Strong Finish Beau Supreme ran Royal Blue to half a length in the Rakaia Three-year-Old Handicap on the first day of the meeting. The promising Christchurchowned, Washdyke - trained Beau Diable gelding ran out of ground after failing to go the early pace, but this run had much merit as a trial for seven-furlong and longer races. Her Pal established her class with wins at Riccarton and Trentham last season, and lack of recent racing might not weigh against her at a sprint distance. At this stage of the season, and at this distance, she is expected to beat Agrippa, another making a fresh start. Royal Blue and Baloney both won on Saturday and Pacemaker was fourth, with the luck of the running all against him, behind Royal A

Blue, Beau Supreme, and Pango. Not Extended First-day form should be the form that really matters in the County High-weight today. The corresponding race on Saturday was something of a romp for Polar, and it is difficult to imagine how he will be beaten today. Together is a newcomer at the meeting with the ability to make first-day form valueless in the Mount Somers Handicap. If she gets firm footing she should match the stablemates, Cosmetic and Pango, at six furlongs. Cosmetic lost first place in the Eiffelton Hack Handicap on Saturday through interference to rival runners when she failed to keep straight from near the home turn. She was relegated to fourth. If

she shows the same tendency today Pango could be a stronger runner for the Thistoll stable. Of the minor races none on today’s card will attract more interest than the Methven Improvers’ Handicap. On the first-day form Spanish Fox, Chow Maine, Gunga Din, and Not Guilty have strong chances and the promising Gold Marc is a newcomer at the meeting quite capable of providing an upset. Spanish Fox ran the highly promising Next Please to a neck in the Chatmos Improvers’ Handicap on Saturday. Gunga Din was fourth in that race, and could have lost a winning chance when he got into cramped quarters on the inside near the end of the race.
