‘Natural Body Defences Against Drugs In Danger’

“The Press” Special Service LONDON, Sept. 10. Contraceptive pills and car exhaust fumes may be joining other substances in the human body to break down the natural defences against drugs and poisons, according to Dr. D. V. Parke, of St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London. He says that although the body has an enzyme system to deactivate drugs and poisons, when there are many of these substances in the system they have a collective effect which can either improve the work of enzymes or inhibit it Either of these two effects can be harmful to the body’s defence system, he says. “Insecticide, carbon monoxide from the pollution of the urban atmosphere by exhaust fumes, oral contraceptives, and addiction to nar-

cotic drugs” are the most likely sources of harm to the defence system, says Dr. Parke.
