REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY Taranaki’s Second Tour Victory

(N.Z. Press Association) With sturdy defensive work, Taranaki weathered repeated assaults to beat Otago, 5-3. at Carisbrook on Saturday, and score the second win of its South Island tour.

Otago showed a greater desire to use its backs, who were quicker and more imaginative than their opposites, while the home pack was well on top in the loose.

But the greasy ground and occasional heavy showers were against attacking Rugby and Taranaki, by adopting safety-first tactics, lasted through a torrid scoreless second half. D. Wards scored a try for Taranaki, which was converted by K. Hurley. Otago’s points came from a penalty goal kicked by E. S. Taylor. After being down. 8-11, at half-time. South Canterbury beat Mid-Canterbury, 16-14, at Ashburton Mid-Canterbury had the chance to equalise right on time after scoring a try, but A. H. A. Smith’s conversion kick was wide. For South Canterbury, R. Halliday, P. Ryan. M. Moffat and D. Connely scored tries, and G. Brown kicked two conversions. For Mid-Canter-bury. M. P. Isaacs and A. G. Goodwin scored tries, and Smith kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Canterbury B beat Nelson, 17-6, at Nelson. Nelson led, 3-0 at half-time, but faded away in the closing stages, when Canterbury scored 14 ponts in 15 minutes.

For Canterbury R. Inwood. N. O’Brien and J. Adams scored tries: G. W’aterreus kicked two

field goals and a conversion. For Nelson, C. Jennings scored a try and M. Delany kicked a penalty. Wanganui collapsed badly in the second half of its match against Manawatu and was beaten 30-6. The teams were fairly even up to half-time when Manawatu led 9-0, but Wanganui lost all cohesion and drive in the second half, in spite of having the help of the wind. For Manawatu, Taitoko scored 18 points (four penalties and three conversions), while tries were scored by D. Kitchen, A. Cornelius, J. Rumball and D. Knight. For Wanganui, R. Chase scored a try and P Crocker a field goal.
