Resistance To Red Guards

(N Z. Press Association—Copyright) HONG KONG, September 11. Powerful members of the Chinese Communist Party rebelled against the central committee and tried to turn workers and peasants against the Red Guards, Peking Radio said today.

The radio quoted from an editorial in the Peking “People’s Daily” calling for unity. The broadcast coincided with press reports in Hong Kong of clashes between several hundred workers and the Red Guards in Canton on Friday night. The reports said the fighting started when some Red Guards tried to cut off the hair of a young man with a “capitalist” hair style. According to the reports, Chinese Army troops were called in to stop the fighting between workers at a glassware factory and the Red Guards. “Many” persons w'ere hurt. “The whole people must support each other and must depend and believe on each other,” said the editorial. “The party’s central committee has already clearly stated that there must be great unity between workers and peasants, between students and students, and also

between workers, peasants and students. “But there are dignitaries (important functionaries) of some regional units who act counter to the party’s central committee and who oppose the students. “By this action those dignitaries act counter to chairman Mao Tse-Tung and chairman Mao’s thoughts. Therefore, we must heighten vigilance. “Nobody is allowed to sue the workers and peasants for opposing the students. Whoever opposes chairman Mao als< opposes the Communist Party and also opposes socialism. “The workers and peasants must support the students. It is unavoidable that the students have some shortcomings, but the .students can learn to improve. “Therefore it is not permitted to focus attention on the students’ few shortcomings and interfere with or oppose the students’ revolutionary actions.”
