No More Marathons

A USTRALIA'S record, breaking distance runner. R. Clarke, has competed in his last marathon. When he returned from the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica after taking silver medals in the three and six miles, he said that he was convinced his training procedure was “all wrong.” Clarke said that he would immediately change his training programme from marathon type to more speed training. “I will contest more 800 metres and mile races in competition in

future, with marathons definitely out,” he said. His pre-games training comprised three daily sessions, one of 12 or 13 miles and the others of four or five miles. “I thought marathon training was the best training but now I am convinced that 26 miles of running on the road is no good for six miles on the track,” he said. Now 29, Clarke has emphasised that he is keen to prove himself by winning at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968. He has scoffed at suggestions that he might retire.
