TROTTING FINE FREE-FOR-ALL FIELD AT HUTT PARK

One of the smallest fields on the programme will be the one which attracts most attention at Hutt Park Raceway tonight. It is the Roydon Lodge Free-for-all, in which there are only five acceptors, among them the Dominion’s top pacers.

With Lords h i p, Robin Dundee and Wait a k i Hanover, three of the must tightly assessed pacers in commission at present engaged, it is not surprising that the Wellington Trotting Club’s feature race failed to attract many acceptors.

Lordship has a sprint ratling of 2:9 and Robin Dundee and Waitaki Hanover are both 2:10 class pacers over sprint distances. But the presence -of these tightly assessed southerners has not deterred the connexions of Full Sovereign and Lonesome Valley, which will represent North Island stables in the race. Full Sovereign and Lonesome Valley both have 2:11 sprint ratings so are at a disadvantage when meeting the others at level marks. If the result follows betting trends the winner probably will be Lordship. If victory

goes his way it will be welldeserved, for Hutt Park has not been his luckiest course. During a distinguished career he has enjoyed only one previous success there —in the Roydon Lodge Free-for-all four years ago. Lordship showed that he was as fit and well as ever when he finished fourth from 54 yards in the National Handicap at Addington Raceway a fortnight ago.

Also Impressive Robin Dundee’s close fifth in the same race was equally impressive. She started from the same mark as Lordship, was far back until fairly late in the race and then produced one of her characteristically brilliant late runs. Robin Dundee will try for her third win at Hutt Park tonight. The last tim e she was successful there was in March when she won the Jubilee Handicap from the back mark of 42 yards. That was an outstanding performance on a heavy track. Robin Dundee might compete under similar conditions tonight. There was steady rain in Wellington yesterday and bad weather is forecast, so the track should be soft. But Waitaki Hanover, which gave away starts of up to 30 yards and won the National Handicap a fortnight ago almost as he liked, might be the one all have to beat tonight. He has now won his last three races and seems to improve all the time. Full Sovereign, last season’s Wellington Cup winner, show ed that he is well forward by winning twice at matinee meetings in the north recently. Lonesome Valley, which graduated from the 2:19-class with eight wins last season, also showed that he had reached a fairly high standard of fitness by his placing at the Epsom trials last month. Tonight’s T.A.B. double will be on the Pressmen’s and Members’ Handicaps. Abbey Frost and Direct Globe might be the successful combination. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Welcome and Electric Handicaps. The Templeton stablemates, Garrison’s Choice and Goldmount, are a fancied combination.
