Fishing Industry Inquiry Set Up

(New Zealand Press Association)

NAPIER, September 9.

» Financial problems facing the fishing industry will be examined by a joint committee of Government and fishing-industry representatives.

The president of the Commercial Fishing-boat Owners’ Association (Mr J. D. Olsen) said today that the committee was formed after submissions by the association’s finance committee to the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake), the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) and Treasury officials in Wellington last week.

“The submissions were well received by the Government which is more than sympathetic to the industry’s needs,” Mr Olsen said. “Both’ Mr Lake and Mr Scott undertook to set up im-

mediately a committee comprising four Ministers, Treasury officials and representatives of the industry. “The committee will fully consider the submissions with a view to obtaining positive finance, tax incentives, equipment imports and technological training facilities which are so badly needed.” Mr Olsen agreed the fishing industry faced a grim financial future. “The future is grim for New Zealand fishermen unless the Government takes some positive action to assist the industry financially.”
