LANGUAGE LABORATORY AT CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY.—The modern languages department of the university this week commissioned its new languages laboratory. It has 30 booths. Each student has a tape recorder from which he hears a specimen of foreign language. The student then records his own pronunciation of the passage. The play-back enables close comparisons to be made. The lecturer can monitor the work any student is doing and speak to an individual, group, or the whole class, by adjusting switches on the master console.
