Obituary MRS C. LESLIE
Mrs Caroline Leslie, for many years a well-known identity of Gisborne, died in Christchurch this week. She was 83. Mrs Leslie who was educated at the Christchurch Giris’ High School, was born at Amberley, Canterbury. She was the daughter of Mr J. J. Wooler, an Englishman who was in business there for many years. Later her father bought a sheep station near Gisborne, and the family moved there. In 1907, Mrs Leslie married Mr Peter Robert Denny Leslie at Gisborne. Widowed in her early, thirties, Mrs Leslie, who had three young children to support turned to music, and taught the piano to hundreds of Gisborne children. In later years she was, in many instances, teaching the grandchildren of her early pupils. No child who was musically gifted was ever turned away because of inability to pay for lessons, and in her teaching life time she produced some excellent musicians. She is survived by her daughter (Mrs Nancy Stoneham, of Barrow-in-Furness) and two sons, Mr John Leslie (Lyttelton) and Mr Derek Leslie (Wainui-o-mata).
