‘WEIRD MOB’ BAN SOUGHT

Vieiv Of Aust. ‘Disgusting’

(Special Crspdt. N.Z PA ) SYDNEY, Sept. 8

A Sydney City Council aiderman asked the Lord Mayor, Aiderman J. I. Armstrong, to take action to stop the film of John O’Grady’s novel “They’re A Weird Mob” being sent overseas. Aiderman C. Wallace said he had been disgusted by the picture of Australia shown in the film. “It shows us as being only one step removed from Dad and Dave,” he said. “It characterises Australians as beer-swilling and gambling people who indulge in crudities.” Alderman Wallace said the film would make Australia look foolish overseas.

Said the Sydney “Daily Mirror”: “When we have aidermen to make Australia look foolish, who needs a film?”

The Lord Mayor turned down the request.
