SIGN FOR SAFETY

Little River Children

The Wairewa County Council will take steps to ensure the safety of Little River children as they enter and leave the school grounds. In reply to a request for action from the Little River School Committee the council agreed yesterday to erect a sign at the bridge leading to Western Valley road, warning motorists of the presence of children.

The council also decided to ask the school authorities to give the children more road safety drill. Councillors agreed that local drivers were the main source of danger to the children although the children were also at fault. The children were accustomed to wander all over the road while going to and from school, councillors said.

There is no footpath alongside the roadway and the verges are becoming overrun with flourishing grass. The Little River School Committee told the council that the problem had been raised 35 years ago, but was never dealt with.
