HOMES FOR TEENAGERS

Cottage Type Suggested

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU. Sept. 9.

A new type cottage home, supervised by a matron and ! husband, should be provided ito care for teen-agers, says I the convener of the general committee of the South Canterbury Presbyterian Social Service Association (Mr G. A. Hornsey) said in his annual report. The function of such a home would be to look after six or seven young persons from 12 years of age until they were fully mature and equipped to meet life in this modern age says the report. “It is also envisaged that a home could provide accommodation for young persons coining from country homes to the city in search of employment.” A. “family” of 30 children had been maintained throughout the year at the association’s children’s home. Mr Hornsey referred to the “dedicated service” on the part of the small staff. The report of the general committee added that teenagers required a “home life” atmosphere rather than institutional care. To give effect to this, it had started negotiations with the Department of Education with the idea of opening a family home.
