FIRST NAVAL BASE

125 Years Since Founding

(N.Z. Press Association*

WELLINGTON, Sept. 9.

The 125th anniversary of the founding of New Zealand’s first naval base will be observed by the Royal New Zealand Navy next week.

Early records show that Lieutenant Snow, of the Royal Navy, landed in Auckland on September 13, 1841, with orders to establish a small base. A site on the North Shore near the present naval base was chosen.

Next Tuesday at the place where Lieutenant Snow landed, now marked by a flagstaff, the band of the Royal New Zealand Navy, with the corps of drums of the Women's Royal New Zealand Naval Service and a guard from H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel, will perform the Navy’s sunset ceremony.
