ILam’s New Computer Centre

The University of Canterbury computer, probably the most complex instrument in an institution where complex equipment abounds, was taken from its original quarters in the School of Engineering to the new computer centre at Ham this week and recommissioned in two days.

Operators who understand all that is involved say this is a record.

The pleasant new computer centre is about the middle of “University drive” which runs from the main entrance on Clyde road through to Ham road.

This is the first real rest the computer has had in four years. It has ,been in use 23 J hours a day for that period and has had a full shut-down only on Christmas days. Although some members of the public have thought working time figures have been exaggerated, university staff

have in fact been using the computer at all hours every day of every week. This is the only way the demand for its services can be met. At times there have been long waiting lists. Virtually every department now uses the computer. Work ranges from calculations in such predictable fields as

mathematics, engineering, and science to such unexpected uses as education analysis and language studies. The photograph shows the new computer room. The centre also has lecturer’s offices, lecture rooms, preparation rooms, and space for equipment extensions.
