Dr. Geiringer’s Motives Queried

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, September 9

“Anybody familiar with the contents of the 50-page report prepared by a committee of the Auckland division of the B.M.A. realised its immense value in reviewing general practice as a part of the B.M.A’s study of the whole medical service,” said Dr. L. Brown, chairman of the association’s council, today.

He was replying to a statement made in New Plymouth by Dr. E. Geiringer, secretary of the New Zealand Medical Association. Dr. Brown said that Dr. Geiringer had stated that on June 22, Mr J. B. Gordon, M.P., used the committee’s report in Parliament to oppose a Labour motion.

This was not correct because the report of the committtee had not been completed until July and it had only recently been circulated to B.M.A. members.

The report was clearly

marked: “Confidential to memers of the British Medical Association. Not for publication. This document has been prepared by a committee of the Auckland division and it has not yet been submitted to council.” Dr. Brown said that Dr. Geiringer, who was not a member of the 8.M.A., had stated at an open meeting of doctors that he had obtained a copy of the report and had given it -to the press. What was his intention? Was he acting in the interest of the 8.M.A., the profession, or the public?
