Oct. Trial Date •
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Sept. 9.
Dimitrio Tsafendas, who assassinated the Prime Minister, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd, appeared for examination today before a Cape Town magistrate.
He was not represented by lawyers, and was remanded in custody until October 6.
The South African Commissioner of Police, LieutenantGeneral Johannes Keevy, said that according to his documents, Tsafendas was a Portuguese naitonal, born in Lourenco Marques. He was not Greek or South African. General Keevy tonight warned South Africans not to take reprisals against members of South Africa’s Greek community because of the assassination. The Parliamentary caucus of the ruling National Party will meet on Tuesday to select its new leader—-who will then be asked by President Charles Swart to become Prime Minister.
