FREIGHT RATE INCREASES

Manufacturers Concerned

Manufacturers were bitterly disappointed when increases in shipping freight rates from Britain and the Continent were announced recently, the president of the Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr J. R. Maddren) said yesterday. Manufacturers, he said, felt very much the same about the increase now announced in freight rates between North American ports and New Zealand. “Each one of these announcements adds further to production costs,” he said. “These increases are biting further into our limited reserves of overseas funds.”

Towed In.— The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s dredge Canterbury was towed to the inner harbour yesterday afternoon by the tug Lyttelton 11, after her steering chain had snapped.
