RANDOM REMINDER

Life seems sometimes to be nothing but stepping in puddles and getting splashed. There are certainly days when nothing seems to go right. Take the case of the man who was late for work because he had been completing some alterations . to his domestic arrangements which left him with a light switch which had only one position—on. His wife said she would come to town in the car with him, to catch up time, and she would take the car with her, because she had some shopping to do.

Some hours later, she telephoned him at his office, with the sorry new*

that she had lost her rings —two of them, both very valuable, and one of them of particular significance, because it had been her mother’s engagement ring. She explained that while he had been driving into town, she had been applying some hand lotion and had put the rings on a parcel in the glove box. And. she said, with a faintly critical note to her voice, he had driven so fast that the parcel had slipped from side to side and no doubt the rings had fallen down. He was on the back foot immediately, but willing to help. Had she looked in the car? She had, thoroughly. All right then, he said, in his best Perry Mason manner, when he

had got out at work had she walked round the car to the driver's seat or simply slipped across to it? She had not got out of the car. she said. Well then, had she searched the driver’s side? She had, and the rings were not there There was an awkward pause. Then she announced that she proposed to go back to where she had parked the car in town and start from there. But. he said, that was five hours ago; the scent, if any. would be lost. But woman-like, off she went She drove into Lichfield street and parked her car at the same metered space she had used before. She stepped out of the car, and there they were, on the road, in perfect condition.
