Ships From U.K. To Arrive Next Week

Several vessels which have left Britain since the end of the seamens’ strike will arrive at Lyttelton in the next week. An increase in the amount of cargo landed at Lyttelton is expected as a result.

The district traffic manager of Railways (Mr M. H. Leineweber) said the department was prepared for this and would have waggons ready. Next Monday there would probably be eight overseas vessels in Lyttelton, unloading about 7500 tons of cargo, said the Lyttelton Harbour

Board’s traffic manager (Mr J. B. Graham). On Tuesday, the Melbourne Star would arrive with a further 4200 tons of cargo from the United Kingdom. “No terrific build-up” was expected at Lyttelton, and the trend seemed to be that the normal vessels were running but were carrying more cargo than usual, Mr Graham said. There would be some shipping delays on goods ordered from the United Kingdom during or soon after the strike but these would be reduced and it seemed likely the position would be almost back to normal by October.
