Consideration By Australia
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Aug. 31. The Australian Government is considering an extension of Australia’s exclusive fishing zone from three to 12 miles, the Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Adermann, said last night.
This would not involve Australia’s territorial waters, he said in the House of Representatives.
Mr Andermann gave a written reply to Mr C. H. Webb a Western Australian Opposition Labour member, who asked what action ..cs being taken to prevent foreign fishing boats working on the Australian coast. “The Government is anxious to do everything in its power to conserve free-swim-ming fisheries resources in water adjacent to Australia,” Mr Adermann said. “In particular it is anxious to prevent over-fishing in those waters by foreign-based fishermen. “To this end. th? Government is now examining the possibility of extending from three to 12 miles the breadth of Australia’s exclusive fisheries zone.”
