Menus And Meals Back To Winter

Cold, wintry weather this week meant back to winter meals and menus for Christchurch households just as many people thought spring was coming.

Grocers, who had begun planning summer programmes, found a sudden demand for canned soups, soup mixes, porridge oats and other winter lines. Later this week the sun broke through again, and if the fine weather continues the soups will again be pushed to the back of the shelves. Potato Chips.—A new company just formed in Christchurch is to make potato crisps. Later the company will market deep frozen French fried

crinkle-cut. chips. Under the Mr Chirpy brand, the crisps will sell in lioz, 4oz and Soz packs at 9d, 2s and 3s 9d.

Cornflour. —Bulk cornflour is now dearer and this has made it necessary for repackers to advance retail prices. The increase, about Id per lb, means that some brands will in future sell for 2s Id.

Fruit Juice.—Distributors of Rare are increasing the price of some lines. This is because fruit is dearer. Rises of 2d and 4d take the 121 oz cans to 2s and the 440 z cans to 6s 3d. The smaller size is popular for price cutting in some supermarkets.

Instant Juice.— Fruit juice has been added to the “Instant” range with the introduction by Hansells of Instant Quench in 7oz cans. This is a concentrate that requires the addition of five cans of water. It comes in two flavours: orange and lemon and sells for 2s fid a can.
