FESTIVAL CRICKET
West Indies Score Quickly ( N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) HASTINGS. The West Indians opened the Hastings festival cricket week in true carnival fashion against A. E. R. Gilligan’s XI on the first day of the three-day match. The touring side scored 351 runs in just over four hours before being dismissed and then had their opponents reeling at four for 70 at the close. Four of the West Indians —C. Hunte (54), P. Lashlev 160), D. Allan (51) and C. Griffith (63 not out), rattled up half-centuries in the run spree. Griffith’s score was his highest of the tour. In reply, only B. Bolus, the Nottinghamshire opening batsman, stood up against a fiery West Indian attack. Bolus hit 38 out of the 70 runs scored by his side before being dismissed off the last ball of the day. Now Gilligan’s side-needs another 132 to avoid the fol-low-in, a task which on the first day’s play would seem beyond them.
