FEDERAL HOTEL LEASE CHANGES
One of the oldest guest houses in Christchurch, the 120-bedroom Federal Hotel, changed hands yesterday. It has been taken over by the licensee of the adjacent Market Hotel (Mr P. C. Mangos).
Last evening Mr Mangos said that he had taken over the lease of the Federal. He had not bought it. Mr B. W. Marshall has held the lease for the last 19 years. The Federal is owned jointly by the Bradley Estate and the Bowker Estate as there are two titles to the building Mr Mangos said the hotel’s general standard would be raised and the interior would be renovated. Flooring and carpeting would be renewed. The entrance area and hotel frontage would be repainted and modernised. Mr Mangos said an investigation of the long-term devel-
opment of the two adjacent hotels would be made. The site of the two hotels had great potential, Mr Mangos said. “When the new Town Hall is built and the surrounding area landscaped, this could be the new city centre and the hub of Christchurch. Where better to have a hotel?”
