SAIGON SHOOTING Negro Soldiers Kill Woman

SAIGON, Sept. 1. Three American soldiers were detained today after the shooting of a 33-year-old Vietnamese woman in a crowded street in the heart of Saigon. The men, al] Negroes, were dressed in green jungle fatigues The woman, a pavement vendor with baskets of food, was killed by a single pistol shot in the chest. She was killed only 20 yards from the enlisted men s billet in central Saigon. The woman’s husband and children wept beside her body. Police and ambulancemen put her body on the pavement and covered it with a green cloth. Her food laden baskets lay beside her. The shooting took place in Hai Ba Trung street, in a section lined with bars frequented by American servicemen and crowded with pave-
ment stalls and bicycle rickshaws The three men were detained by American military police and South Vietnamese police.
