Starlifter On Show

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. Representatives of the producer boards will be given a demonstration of the capabilities of the Lockheed Starlifter—the largest four - engined airfreighter in the world —when it arrives in Wellington from Sydney tomorrow. The Starlifter has been grounded in Sydney since last Friday after a taxi-ing accident.

It damaged its nose wheel when it landed and a complete nose-wheel unit had to be flown from the United States. The Starlifter recently transported a 27,0001 b twostage rocket from Munich and Paris to the Woomera rocket range. The producer boards -re planning an intensive study of the long-term possibilities

of transporting farm produce by air over long distances.

The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation claims that the Lockheed 500, at present being developed, will be the first air-freighter capable of carrying New Zealand meat overseas on a large scale. It is estimated that the 500 will carry meat cargoes of more than 500 tons out of average-sized New Zealand airfields in stages of up to 2800 miles at cost of about 2d a ton-mile.
