Zambia
Sir, —Cabled reports from the United Kingdom indicate that the reason President Kaunda of Zambia is not going to London to attend the Prime Ministers’ Conference is that he is undecided whether he should withdraw his country from the Commonwealth if Mr Harold Wilson refuses to use force against Rhodesia A more likely reason is his concern at leaving his country, as he might well find his position usurped by another member of his Cabinet during his absence abroad. Dr. Kaunda started off as a moderate leader, but he has been forced by left-wing elements to adopt a tougher attitude, and he is now virtually carried along by the tide, which is gradually leading his country, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda into serious trouble by their inability to see who is the real enemy.—Yours, etc.,
P. G. H. SCOTT, August 31, 1966.
