ASHBURTON CLUB HAS POOR YEAR
“Financially, the year has been most disappointing, almost entirely because of the loss of more than £lOOO at the winter meeting,” said the chairman of the Ashburton County Racing Club (Mr W. R. Lemon) in his report to the annual meeting yesterday. “Up until the winter meeting, it appeared as if the club would have a reasonably successful year, but adverse weather before the meeting had a serious effect on the financial result.
“We have done our utmost to assist owners, by increasing stakes and float subsidies. As a result, from four days racing, the Government received £18,377 while the club lost £1351. In order that smaller clubs may survive, it is imperative that further taxation relief should be given to them,” said Mr Lemon. Life Members Two club members who had excellent long-service records were elected life members of the club. They Mr J. H. Grigg, who joined the club in 1919 and was present for 20 years from 1946; and Mr R, Mulligan, who joined in 1920 and was chairman of the club for 18 years.
