Princess At Games

Princess Anne’s reaction to an apparently novel experience at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica was as natural and uninhibited as any 16-year-old—the finals of the wrestling had her “hopping up and down” with excitement, said Mr J. A. McInnes, of Christchurch, who was an official at the Games. Mr Mclnnes said he was impressed with the happy, natural air shown by Prince Charles and Princess Anne. “I was able to meet the Royal family at several functions,” said Mr Mclnnes. "Princess Anne asked about New Zealand and said she had been told it was a lovely country.” Because Mr Mclnnes was chief technical officer for wrestling at the Games, he was seated near the Royal stand and was able to observe the Princess quite closely. "She was screwing up her programme, and several times she clutched hold of the aide-de-camp sitting beside her,” said Mr Mclnnes. There seemed to be no restrictions placed on the Prince and Princess for they moved freely about the stadium, exchanging laughing remarks with each other in passing. Princess Anne went with her father to the wrestling, but showed an equally keen interest and enjoyment in all the sports. “They seemed a very happy family group, and were obviously enjoying their time at the Games. It was by no means just a duty to attend.”
