Lack Interest In Work
The lack of interest shown by retail sales assistants in the products they sell and in their customers is not confined to Christchurch but is part of a Dominion-wide trend, says Miss Anne Fox, retail liaison officer with Fibremakers (New Zealand), Ltd. Miss Fox is giving lectures to staff in a city store on customer courtesy and the production and uses of nylon garments. Next week she will compere parades of nylon lingerie and sports garments in the same store. Part of the trouble with sales assistants today was that they seemed to have no pride in themselves and their job
and were not interested in finding out about the goods they were paid to sell, she said. “This does not apply to every sales assistant. Some are very good,” said Miss Fox, "but the majority are waiting around for pay day.” She considered that some of the reasons for this attitude could be full employment, difficult customers, or being in the wrong department. In her lectures, Miss Fox demonstrates by being interested in their work people can obtain more satisfaction from it. Born in England, Miss Fox came to New Zealand about 14 years ago. She took a deportment and modelling course before returning to England for a working trip. Tn London she was a recep-
tionist and house model for the Eastex Company where she gained experience in textiles. Later she spent two years in California where she did television and open air modelling as well as holding a variety of jobs. “This experience has been valuable in my public relations work,” she said.
