Flying Surf Patrol Guarantee Sought
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Without a guarantee of funds in excess of £2OOO it will not be possible to operate a flying surf pattrol scheme next summer, says the annual report of the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association. Week-end air patrols of popular beaches were suggested last year to give early warning of sharks and rips. The council would be Interested in obtaining a sponsor prepared to make funds available for this safety precaution.
Last year lifesavers made 348 rescues—Bs with belt and line, 162 without belt and line and 101 with, surf skis and other equipment The association finds the increasing number of board riders requiring help “disturbing." “It is apparent that many board riders of below average swimming ability not only risk their own lives but those of rescuers too," it says. The Piha Surf Lifesaving Club made the most rescues at 71. Second was another Auckland club, Muriwai, with 43.
