Few Surprises In Championship

All seeded players safely negotiated the opening rounds of the New Zealand individual table tennis championships at Cowles Stadium yesterday. although Mrs M. J. Shadbolt (Canterbury) and Miss B. Pack wood (Auckland) were both beaten by the 15-year-old Otasro player. Miss Y. M. Fogarty, in the first two rounds.

The seeded men all came through, although J. Armstrong (Canterbury), seeded sixth, had to struggle hard to beat R. E. Lassen (Auckland) in their third round match. Miss M. Green (Canterbury) gained a splendid win against the Hutt Valley representative player, Miss J. E. Bush, in the under-18 girls’ singles contest, but few of the Canterbury singles entrants survived the opening rounds After three rounds, only Armstrong, V. N. Brightwell, C. W. C. Tilby, G. R. Saunders and M. R. Spinks, were left to represent Canterbury in' the men’s open singles. K. Ward (Canterbury) played well to defeat D. A. Leong (Wellington) in the under-18 boys’ singles as Leong had beaten him in the South • Island championships. However, in general, the North ‘lsland players reaffirmed i their superiority.
