Oyster Boat Makes Big Catch
With one month of the 1966 oyster season left, the Christchurch oyster boat Kumea has made a catch of 10,035 sacks of oysters. This is the first time in about six years that an oyster boat has caught as many.
The Kumea, which is owned by Fisheries (South Island), Ltd., began in 1964 and returned 6182 sacks, a daily average of 58 sacks. Up to August 31 last year her catch was 7166 sacks and when the season ended her figure was 8017 sacks. The daily average this season is 84 sacks.
The chairman of directors, Mr B. R. Walker, said that each year orders for Kumea oysters had increased. This was because the oysters were loaded on trucks the day they were landed and arrived in Christchurch the next morning.
“Road transport ensures that the oysters arrive in top condition,” said Mr Walker.
