Flares At Sea
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Sept. 1. The sighting of flares at sea off the south coast of Otago last night was being investigated by police early this morning. The only ship in the area unaccounted for is the 8722-ton Dutch freighter Schelde Lloyd. The flares were first reported to the Dunedin police about 10.30 p.m., and were seen by persons from Green Island to the south of the Tautuku Peninsula. No further sightings were made after about 11 p.m. Awarua Radio has been unable to get in touch with the Dutch ship, which left Bluff for Auckland at 2.20 p.m. yesterday. The ship anchored off Stirling point, the pilot station at Bluff Harbour, until 7.40 p.m. with engine trouble, and then continued north in about the area where the flares were seen.
