BURWOOD TREES

No Topping Yet A forester had recommended that the trees on the boundary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board's plantation in Burwood road should not be topped or felled because of the harmful effect it would have on the rest of the plantation, said Mr L. A. Bennett at a meeting of the board yesterday. . Residents on the other side of Burwood road had complained that the trees were shading their properties.

Mr Bennett said the timber was very valuable and he had been surprised to learn that it would be in short supply in two or three years. “It would pay us to keep them,'’ he said. “We’ve got to be realistic. The trees were there before the people and are a valuable asset to the board. We will begin harvesting the timber next year.”

The Burwood subsidiary committee had asked that an earlier decision not to remove the trees be reconsidered, and as a result the forester’s opinion was sought. Mr ft. G. Armstrong told the board that the residents across the streets were young people with children, and needed to get sunlight. “I would like the board to treat this matter urgently,” he said, “and have the trees topped or removed.”

Mrs R. M. Macfarlane said her sympathies were more with the residents than with the value of the timber. The chairman of the board (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) said he was sympathetic with the residents of Burwood road. The trees did shade their properties and the board would like to help them. “But in view of the professional reports we will have to wait a little while.” he said. “I hope something can be done before next winter.”

Training For Leader

Mr R. Foubister, leader of the next Campbell Island expedition, will be given eight weeks’ training in the emergency and accident department at Christchurch Hospital before he leaves for Campbel] Island.

The North Canterbury Hospital Board approved this yesterday after a request had been received from the Department of Civil Aviation.
