AUCKLAND, August 29,
Another “first” has been achieved by the Auckland policewoman, Senior Sergeant Elizabeth Bennett. She is now the first woman in New Zealand to pass the Police Force commissioned officers’ examination and eligible for promotion to inspector. Miss Bennett’s police career has been peppered with precedents. Four years after joining the force, in 1955, she became the first woman to be made a senior-sergeant. Before her appointment to the Criminal Investigation Branch, Miss Bennett attended an 11-week course in Wellington with young detectives from all main centres. She topped the course with 921 per cent for law and 88 per cent for practice. In 1961, Miss Bennett became the first woman noncommissioned officer in the
New Zealand police and afterwards transferred to the uniform branch to become head of the policewomen’s division in Auckland.
