AWARD TO UNIVERSITY
First Science Contract
For the first time, a New Zealand Government department has awarded a contract for scientific research. It has been awarded to the University of Canterbury by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for air-glow research in Rarotonga.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University (Professor N. C. Phillips) said such contracts were not uncommon in the United States, but this was the first in New Zealand.
Subject to a suitable student being found for the work, the D.S.I.R. would pay £l6OO in the current financial year and £lOOO the following year and there would be no expense for the university, he said.
