CANBERRA, August 26
Australia and New Zealand should combine to develop the food potential of the Antarctic, Mr W. C. Wentworth said in the Federal Parliament.
Scientists have stated that the Antarctic ocean contains half the world’s animal protein, he said. Mr Wentworth, a Liberal (Government) member of Parliament, speaking during the Budget debate in the House of Representatives, said the C.5.1.R.0. and its New Zealand counterpart, the D.5.1.R., should increase cooperation in scientific research.
The development of Antarctic ocean resources have been neglected, he said.
“Is it out of the question that a starving world, a world that is protein-hungry, might find some source of relief from the exploitation of these waters which teem with this life?” he asked. Mr Wentworth said the ocean was probably a greater source of animal food than of human food.
This would allow a greater animal population to be maintained for the production of normal food items.
