Costs Heavy Fine Light

The cost involved in prosecuting a ratepayer had been eight times more than the fine imposed by the court, the Akaroa County Council was told yesterday. The council had prosecuted Mr L. A. G. V. Craw, of Chorlton for encroaching on a public road with a boundary fence. To take the case to court, the council had to engage a surveyor to establish that the fence had, in fact, been built on the road. The county clerk (Mr L. G. Eade) told the council yesterday that the surveyor’s fee had been £l6O. The solicitors who acted for the council put in their bill last week for £4l. Mr Craw was fined £25. The council felt that at least the prosecution would deter others from building on county roads.
