“OLIVER” TO CLOSE
Run Of Six Years
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, August 28.
The London cast of “Oliver” were told last night that the musical is to close on September 10 after more than six years, the “Daily Sketch” reported.
It is London’s longest-run-ning musical. The composer, Lionel Bart, said: “The show has earned me more than £4,000,000. Bart, who adapted the show from Charles Dickens’s “Oliver Twist” and composed the music by humming the tunes into a tape recorder, said he was very sad about the closing. “The show had to end sometime, but I think it will go on earning me money.” The show toured Australia and the United States.
Recently the film rights were sold for £714,000.
