‘Sitting’ On Gas

r.V.Z. Press Association'

HAMILTON, August 29

Drilling for natural gas at Horotiu, eight miles north of Hamilton, will begin next week. High quality natural gas has been found on a 22-acre property by its joint owners. Mr T. C. Orr and Mr J. E. Knight, of Hamilton.

For the last four years the two men have been "sitting on" their gas strike, waiting for the New Zealand Petroleum Exploration Company’s rights to the area to expire.

The gas hit by the men

has been analysed at 86 per cent pure—much richer than Kapuni gas. It was at a depth of 300 ft, compared with Kapuni’s 3000 ft, said Mr Orr today.

“The contractor driller, an experienced man, will start definitely next week.” said Mr Orr. “We had hoped he would start this week, but he is very busy on another job.” The drilling, which involves the use of some new technique, would be closely observed by Mines Department officials and D.S.I.R. experts would also assist, said Mr Orr.
