Displays To Boost Interest In Tennis

The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association is this week holding its third annual tennis week in which it hopes to increase the memberships of clubs in both town and country. Last year the increase was considerable.

Advertising displays have been arranged at Riccarton Mall, and a stall in Cathedral square on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be manned by members of clubs, who will give information on clubs and will take applications to join. They will also hold a bring and buy sale. Tomorrow from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m., four leading Canterbury players, J. Mitchell, R. McCutcheon, W. Thom and J. Martin, ranked first, second, third and fifth in the province respectively, will play matches on a court marked out on the car park

at Riccarton Mall. The net will be stretched between 40 gallon drums filled with water, Mr B. R. McCallum will be umpire. The association is also holding a “Miss Canterbury Tennis” contest open to members of tennis clubs between the ages of 16 and 30. Already there are nine entries and more are expected. The first appearance of entrants will be at a mannequin parade held by the Jaycees at Riccarton Mall on October 4. Later the finalists will appear at the association’s ball on October 29.
