N.Z. Table Tennis Championships Start

Northland, Auckland and Otago were unbeaten at the end of the second round of the men’s A grade competition on the first day of the New Zealand inter-association teams’ table tennis matches at Cowles Stadium, Christchurch, yesterday.

Canterbury and Northland were undefeated in the women’s A grade competition. All the inter-team matches will be concluded today before the New Zealand individual championships begin on Wednesday. Auckland showed its expected dominance when it dropped only three matches in its first 22 but Wellington came within an ace of beating Northland in the first round, while it featured in the upset of the day by losing, 5-6, to Otago. The standard in the men’s matches was particularly high, with A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland), M. L. Dunne (Auckland), G. A. J. Frew (Northland), T. J. O’Carroll (Northland) and B. A. Foster showing out. There were some surprise results, particularly when G. V. Murphy (Hutt Valley) beat Frew in straight games. C. W. C. Tilby (Canterbury) gained an excellent win against T. A. Quinn (Auckland) but Canterbury did less well than expected and W. T. Scott (Otago), who was a little unlucky to miss selection for the South Island side, beat every member of the Canterbury team, including two South Island representatives. The women’s matches went much as expected, although Auckland gained a surprising victory over Hamilton. Canterbury’s two wins were almost entirely due to Mrs M. J. Shadbolt and Mrs T. May, and

Northland was more clearly dominant, with Mrs N. Traill and Mrs N. Houlihan playing well. However, Mrs Traill, the No. 1 seed for the nationals, was rather surprisingly beaten by Miss C. E. Johnson (Hamilton) in straight games. Mrs D. Wade (Bay of Plenty) was in splendid form. Results were:— MEN A GRADE Round 1 Northland fl, Wellington 3 T. J O'Carroll beat H.
